Visiting Capestrano and canoeing on the Tirino River

Tra le esperienze più belle da vivere in Abruzzo c'è sicuramente la canoa sul Tirino: divertente, a tratti rilassante e adatto a tutti, anche alle famiglie con i bambini.

Andando in Canoa e pagaiando su questo bellissimo fiume scoprirete la meravigliosa storia, la fauna e la flora di questo luogo classificato come uno dei più puliti d'Europa.

Le sue acque cristalline e limpide sono state lodate dal giornale inglese "The Guardian" che l'ha classificato come una delle migliori mete turistiche del 2020.

Il nome del fiume deriva da "Caput Trium Amnium" che sta a significare " A capo delle tre sorgenti", infatti sono proprio tre le sorgenti, che scorrendo sottoterra, alimentano il Tirino: Capo D'Acqua, Il Lago e Presciano.

Tutte fanno parte del comune di Capestrano, un bellissimo borgo che si trova in provincia dell'Aquila.

Difatti una volta fatto il vostro giro in Canoa (vi consiglio di portarvi un cambio di vestiti) potete raggiungere Capestrano a soli cinque minuti di macchina.

Il borgo è situato su un colle che domina tutta la Valle del Tirino.

E' stato dominato da I Piccolomini, I Medici e I Borbone e due sono i simboli più conosciuti di questa zona: "Il guerriero di Capestrano" e il Castello Piccolomini.

Considerato uno dei reperti più rappresentativi dell'Abruzzo, Il guerriero di Capestrano, è una statua del periodo dell'arte italica che raffigura un guerriero dell'antico popolo dei Vestini ed è stata ritrovata da un contadino mentre piantava la vigna.

Catalogato subito come il corpo di un uomo, con postura fiera e maestosa, la vera curiosità risiede nella forma dei suoi fianchi larghi e il torace triangolare che, secondo alcuni studiosi, potrebbero stare a rappresentare anche il corpo di una donna.

E proprio nel Castello Piccolomini a darvi il benvenuto c'è la copia di questa statua, dato che quella vera si trova nel Museo Archeologico di Chieti.

Il castello si trova al centro del Paese ed è stato costruito sui resti di una fortificazione medievale, infatti esso assicurava il controllo e la difesa del territorio e vigilava sulla transumanza e il famoso commercio della lana.

Da qui salendo le scale al suo interno, potete ammirare tutta la vista sulla vallata sottostante e sentirvi un pò come i marchesi e i principi di una volta che si affacciavano ad ammirare il loro territorio.

Un'altra meraviglia da visitare all'interno del castello è il Museo Militare dove troverete tantissimi cimeli della prima e seconda guerra mondiale come selle, casse da maniscalco, racchette che si usavano per la neve, cucine da campo, ma anche tanti oggetti rari di valore inestimabile.

Tralasciando il Castello alle vostre spalle, vi consiglio di farvi una camminata anche per il centro storico dove ci sono stradine e vie molto suggestive, il tempo sembra davvero essersi fermato qui. In questo borgo ci sono diverse costruzioni religiose tra cui la chiesa di San Francesco, Santa Maria del Rosario, San Biagio e la casa di San Giovanni da Capestrano.

Questo ci fà capire quanto erano devoti le popolazioni di quel tempo composti perlopiù da pastori, agricoltori ed artigiani.

Una delle attività molto importanti per il Paese è la pesca sul Fiume Tirino, dove le popolazioni hanno sempre attinto, fin dall'antichità, alle sue risorse naturali costruendo mulini e valchirie ed usufruendo della pesca e la coltivazione dell'orto lungo le sue sponde.

Infatti il piatto tipico di questa zona sono le trote e i gamberi di Fiume che vi consiglio di andare a mangiare nel ristorante A Silvia.

Un luogo davvero incantato e pieno di risorse, tra tradizioni, storia e attività esperienzali il fiume Tirino e Capestrano sono un must da visitare qui in Abruzzo!

Among the most beautiful experiences to live in Abruzzo there is definitely canoeing on the Tirino: fun, sometimes relaxing and suitable for everyone, even for families with children.

Canoeing you will discover the beautiful history, fauna and flora of this river classified as one of the cleanest in Europe.

Its crystal clear waters were praised by the British newspaper "The Guardian" which ranked it as one of the best tourist destinations in 2020.

The name of the river comes from "Caput Trium Amnium" which means " At the head of the three springs", in fact there are just three springs, flowing underground, feed the Tirino: Capo D'Acqua, Il Lago and Presciano.

All are part of the municipality of Capestrano, a beautiful village located in the province of L'Aquila.

In fact, once you have done your Canoe tour (I suggest you bring a change of clothes) you can reach Capestrano just five minutes by car.

The village is situated on a hill that dominates the entire Tirino Valley.

It was dominated by I Piccolomini, I Medici and I Borbone and two are the best known symbols of this area: "The Warrior of Capestrano" and Castello Piccolomini.

Considered one of the most representative finds of Abruzzo, The warrior of Capestrano, is a statue of the Italic period of art that depicts a warrior of the ancient people of Vestini and was found by a farmer while planting the vineyard.

Immediately catalogued as the body of a man, with a proud and majestic posture, the real curiosity lies in the shape of his wide hips and the triangular chest which, according to some scholars, could also represent the body of a woman.

In the Piccolomini Castle to welcome you there is a copy of this statue, since the real one is located in the Archaeological Museum of Chieti.

The castle is located in the center of the country and was built on the remains of a medieval fortification, in fact it ensured the control and defense of the territory and supervised the transhumance and the famous wool trade.

From here going up the stairs inside, you can admire the whole view of the valley below and feel a bit like the marquises and the princes of the past who looked out to admire their territory.

Another wonder to visit inside the castle is the Military Museum where you will find many relics of the First and Second World War such as saddles, blacksmith crates, snowshoes that were used for snow, field kitchens, but also many rare objects of inestimable value.

Leaving the Castle behind, I suggest you to take a walk through the old town where there are streets and streets very suggestive, time really seems to have stopped here. In this village there are several religious buildings including the church of San Francesco, Santa Maria del Rosario, San Biagio and the house of San Giovanni da Capestrano.

This made us understand how devout the populations of that time were, mostly composed of shepherds, farmers and craftsmen.
