"ZOMPO LO SCHIOPPO" WATERFALL

ENG: The Zompo lo Schioppo nature reserve is a protected natural area established in 1987 in the municipality of Morino, in the province of L'Aquila, which covers an area of 1025 hectares.

ITA: La riserva naturale Zompo lo Schioppo è un’area naturale protetta istituita nel 1987 presente nel comune di Morino, in provincia de L’Aquila, che si estende su una superficie di 1025 ettari.

ENG: That of Zompo lo Schioppo is the highest natural waterfall in the whole central Apennines, second only to that of the Rio Verde waterfall of Borrello, also located in Abruzzo in the province of Chieti. In fact, its waters flow from a height of at least 80 meters and pouring into the underlying valley of the town of Morino with an intense roar.

ITA: Quella di Zompo lo Schioppo è la cascata naturale più alta di tutto l’appennino centrale, seconda solamente a quella del Rio Verde di Borrello, anch’essa in Abruzzo in provincia di Chieti. Le sue acque si gettano infatti da un’altezza di almeno 80 metri per poi riversarsi nella sottostante vallata dell’abitato di Morino con un intenso fragore.

ENG: This flagship of the reserve owes its name to the dialect word "zompo" which means jump and the blow that causes the water to break on the rocks like a rifle, the "shotgun" in fact. Approaching the waterfall on windy days this sound can be even more pronounced than usual.

ITA: Questo fiore all’occhiello della riserva deve il nome al termine dialettale “zompo” il cui significato è appunto salto e dal colpo che provoca l’acqua infrangendosi sulle rocce simile ad un fucile, lo “schioppo” appunto. Avvicinandosi alla cascata in giornate ventose questo suono può risultare addirittura più marcato rispetto al solito.

ENG: Originating from karst phenomena, the flow of the waterfall is closely linked to the amount of atmospheric precipitation recorded during the year. The smaller waterfalls in fact, called “delle Monache”, are always present while the main one is intermittent. All this is due to the karst basin that originates them, called "holes", which give rise to waterfalls placed at different heights, the higher hole of the main waterfall, the lower holes the smaller ones: with little rainfall the level of the lowering the water allows the water to exit only the smaller ones.

ITA: Ovviamente, originandosi da fenomeni carsici, la portata della cascata è strettamente collegata alla quantità di precipitazioni atmosferiche registrate durante l’anno. Le cascate minori infatti, denominate “delle Monache”, sono sempre presenti mentre quella principale presenta carattere intermittente. Tutto questo è dovuto al bacino carsico che le origina, chiamati “fori”, che danno luogo a cascate poste a diverse altezze, il foro più in alto della cascata principale, i fori più in basso quelle più piccole: con poche precipitazioni il livello dell’acqua abbassandosi permette all’acqua di uscire solo da quelle più piccole.

ENG: If the waterfall represents the real spectacle of the reserve, the colors and scents of a very special place from a naturalistic point of view are no less important. The forest located between the plain below the waterfall and the stream with its imposing and winding beech trees is truly suggestive, which appear in all their splendor among the countless streams that cross them. There are numerous species present: Apennine wolves, roe deer (permanently in the reserve for some years), foxes, peregrine falcons, eagle owls, barn owls, owls, the very rare golden eagle and the magnificent Marsican brown bear.

ITA: Se la cascata rappresenta il vero spettacolo della riserva non sono da meno i colori e profumi di un luogo davvero particolare dal punto di vista naturalistico. Davvero suggestivo è il bosco situato tra il pianale sottostante la cascata ed il torrente con i suoi imponenti e tortuosi faggi che si presentano in tutto il loro splendore tra gli innumerevoli ruscelli che li attraversano. Numerose sono le specie presenti: lupi appenninici, caprioli (da qualche anno stabilmente nella riserva), volpi, falchi pellegrini, gufi reali, barbagianni, civette, la rarissima aquila reale ed il magnifico orso bruno marsicano.

ENG: The place is so suggestive that even Alexandre Dumas mentions it in his work "La Marsica e il Fucino in a travel chronicle in the mid-1800s".
